A 27-year-old Los Angeles man was sentenced Wednesday to 44 years in prison for a series of residential robberies, including one in which guests at a dinner party were robbed of their money and jewels.

Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Judith Meisels Ashmann called Gregory Glenn Evans a “menace to society” as she sentenced him to the maximum term for the crimes.

Ashmann also ordered Evans to pay $10,000 in restitution to his victims.

A jury last month convicted Evans of 22 counts of residential robbery, five counts of residential burglary and three counts of car theft.

The crimes occurred between March 19 and May 3, 1988, a few months after Evans was paroled from state prison on robbery and grand theft charges, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Shellie Samuels.

Evans and several accomplices preyed upon residents of posh residences south of Ventura Boulevard in the Valley, in West Los Angeles and the Hollywood Hills, prosecutors said.

Two other men have already been convicted and sentenced in connection with some of the crimes, Samuels said.

Evans and the other men entered the residences through open windows or garage doors, often rousing victims from sleep.

They sometimes tied their victims in bedsheets before taking cash and jewelry, Samuels said.

In one instance, Evans held the hostess of an Encino dinner party at gunpoint while accomplices robbed the guests.

In another, Evans tied up two children while robbing their parents’ West Los Angeles residence, Samuels said.
