WORLD IN BRIEF : BRITAIN : Iraq Project a Gun, Officials Convinced

The British government said it is convinced that Iraq was trying to build a huge gun but that customs officers set back the project by seizing eight steel tubes on a dock in England last week. Trade and Industry Secretary Nicholas Ridley praised those who seized the shipment but admitted that his own department cleared the production of the tubes for Iraq two years ago. Weapons experts said that a gun on the scale of the seized parts would have the potential to lob large shells hundreds of miles.
