A 32-year-old woman has died of AIDS in Fiji, the first person to die of the disease in the South Pacific island state, a hospital spokesman said today.

The unidentified woman, an ethnic Indian, was believed to have caught acquired immune deficiency syndrome from a blood transfusion in 1984. She died in a hospital in Lautoka on the western coast of the main island Viti Levu.

She was diagnosed last February as the first Fijian to have contracted the disease. Five other Fijians have been found to be AIDS carriers, medical authorities said.
