The Chicago Bears said published reports had exaggerated the amount of taxes in dispute between the Internal Revenue Service and the team’s owners.

The National reported that the IRS was seeking about $43.5 million in gift and inheritance taxes stemming from a 1981 reorganization of the team. The newspaper said interest and penalties could drive the assessment to more than $50 million.
