Marla Maples says she went into hiding amid the publicity about her reported romance with Donald Trump in part out of concern for her friends’ privacy.

“I didn’t want to bring any more havoc into my friends’ lives,” Maples said in an interview with ABC newswoman Diane Sawyer. “I had to always think about where I was going and what effect it could have on the people I was visiting.”

Sawyer showed a brief clip of the taped interview this morning on the syndicated talk show, “Live With Regis and Kathie Lee.” The interview was to be broadcast tonight on ABC’s “Primetime Live.”

Allegations of the actress-model’s purported affair with Trump first surfaced in February.

After she was thrust into the spotlight, Maples said, “I knew I had to get away. I knew I needed to turn off the television, not read newspapers, just not be affected by words. I needed to get back to what’s real.”

Sawyer said Maples avoided talking about specifics in her relationship with Trump, about which she may have to testify in litigation between the developer and his wife, Ivana.
