Workout: South American presidents are getting in shape by “running” for office. Brazilian President Fernando Collor de Mello, 40, will play on Brazil’s national soccer team in a practice game May 12. He has raced a motorcycle and run a marathon. Argentine President Carlos Menem has also practiced with his country’s national soccer squad and volleyed with Argentine tennis star Gabriela Sabatini.

Secret Plans: Did he make her an offer she couldn’t refuse? The New York Daily News says John A. Gotti, eldest son of reputed Mafia boss John Gotti, will marry Saturday, but the bride’s identity is a secret. Under the headline, “Gotti Jr. Taking Bride and His Pals Taking the Fifth,” the News said no one in Gotti’s Queens neighborhood would talk. The son’s brother, Pete, said: “Didn’t hear about a wedding . . . We don’t even know about a wedding.”

Booked Through the Winter: Author James Michener has made St. Petersburg, Fla., his winter home, saying: “The climate of Florida is very attractive to older people. Believe me, it gets more so every year.” Michener, 83, will live in St. Petersburg from October to early February. He plans to write articles and shorter books there.

New Prize: Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania and two private sponsors announced in Washington, D.C., Thursday that they have created the Lincoln Prize, an annual $50,000 award to go to a book or other work on the Civil War or Abraham Lincoln. The award will be underwritten by Richard Gilder, a partner in a brokerage firm, and Lewis Lehrman, a managing director of a securities firm. The first award is to be presented on Feb. 12, 1991, Lincoln’s birthday.
