From Times staff and Wire reports

African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela called for an intensified armed struggle against the white minority government to speed up negotiations on the end of apartheid. Mandela said recent incidents of police violence against black demonstrators show that the ANC’s guerrilla wing is still needed. President Frederik W. de Klerk, whose Cabinet will meet with a Mandela-led delegation next month, has said the ANC’s continued calls for armed struggle are an obstacle to formal negotiations.
