The United States won its first game and Sweden handed the Soviet Union its first loss in five years at the World Hockey Championships in Bern, Switzerland.

The Americans took a 5-0 lead and held off a rally to beat West Germany, 6-3, for their first victory after four consecutive losses.

The Swedes got a tiebreaking goal from Hakan Loob and beat the Soviets, 3-1.
