Castle & Cooke Inc.: First-quarter profit increased 45% to $18.1 million compared to the same period in 1989, while revenue rose 17% to $658 million. The fresh fruit group’s Chilean operations returned to profitability, while the fresh vegetable group suffered from lower lettuce prices. Profitability of the packaged foods operations was decreased by an expansion of the consumer product lines. Real estate operations improved due to increased residential sales in Hawaii and commercial property sales in California. The Los Angeles holding company operates Dole Food Co. and does real estate development.
