NAMES IN THE NEWS : Cicero Rethinks Ryan White Park

CICERO, Ind. — The Town Council here is trying to come up with another way to honor Ryan White after citizens objected to renaming a park after the young AIDS victim.
One potential compromise is dedicating a memorial in the Red Bridge Park for White. Council members last week announced plans to change the name of the park and a fund for donations to build a playground there. Some $400 had already come in for the project when citizens began objecting to losing the Red Bridge Park name and called the Town Council’s move a ploy to get more money for park development.
White, who became a key figure in the fight against AIDS after being banned from school in Cicero, died April 8 at age 18.
