P.M. BRIEFING : U.S. Hikes Sugar Imports 9.7%
Agriculture Secretary Clayton K. Yeutter today announced a 9.7% increase in the amount of foreign sugar that can be imported by U.S. processors from 40 countries.
Yeutter said the increase boosts the sugar import quota to 2,834,865 metric tons for the period Jan. 1, 1989, through Sept. 30, 1990, an increase of 250,000 tons from 2,584,865 tons announced on Jan. 16.
The latest quota boost was the fourth for 1989-90. Previous increases were made last Sept. 12 and Nov. 24.
Yeutter said “continued supply-demand imbalances” forced a further adjustment in the sugar import quota. The latest figures include the reinstatement of Nicaragua’s share of the U.S. sugar quota.
