Proposed Cuts Will Doom Foot Patrols, Panel Told

A top-ranking Los Angeles police official testified Tuesday that a proposed $7-million cut in police overtime during the coming fiscal year will doom the popular foot patrols and jeopardize other key crime-fighting efforts.
Deputy Chief Jesse Brewer told the City Council’s Budget and Finance Committee that cuts advocated by Mayor Tom Bradley in his $3.68-billion budget proposal will force the department to give up several important programs.
Although Bradley has recommended that the size of the department be increased from 8,414 officers to 8,717, Brewer said “restoration of the overtime funds is critical.” And without the money, “we can kiss the foot beats away.”
