EYE IN SPACE: She missed the 5:34 a.m. space shuttle launch but UC Irvine astrophysicist Virginia Trimble has a special interest in the Hubble Space Telescope (A1). . . . Trimble served on a 1974 NASA panel to select hardware for the telescope and to pick scientists who would oversee the project. Last spring, she helped screen 600 proposals for the use of Hubble. Her own project--a study of the Crab Nebula, whose fiery burst was recorded in China in 1054--did not make the cut.
