WORLD : U.S.-Soviet Trade Pact Reached
U.S. negotiators announced today that they have reached basic agreement on a new trade accord with the Soviet Union that would normalize trade relations between the two countries for the first time in nearly half a century.
U.S. Deputy Trade Representative Julius Katz, the leader of the U.S. negotiating team, said, “Fundamentally, we have reached agreement on the text” of the new pact.
He said that the exact language still needs to be worked out on four minor issues but that he does not believe that they will pose an obstacle to signing a final document when President Bush meets Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev in Washington from May 30 to June 3.
