Chargers Release Jim McMahon

The San Diego Chargers released quarterback Jim McMahon Thursday after an eight-month stay.

General Manager Bobby Beathard said the Chargers and Steve Zucker, McMahon’s agent, were unable to agree on terms.

Zucker confirmed from his office in Chicago that McMahon was seeking more than the $800,000 he played for last season.

McMahon’s contract, which expired Feb. 1, made him the highest-paid Charger. He was acquired for a second-round draft pick in August from Chicago, which he led to a Super Bowl championship in 1986.

McMahon, who will turn 30 in August, was 4-7 as a starter for the Chargers before being replaced by rookie Billy Joe Tolliver for the final four games. He completed 176 of 318 passes for 2,132 yards and 10 touchdowns, and threw 10 interceptions.
