Lawson P. Ramage; Retired Vice Admiral, Medal of Honor Winner

Retired Vice Adm. Lawson P. Ramage, 81, the first living submariner to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Ramage was awarded the nation’s highest honor after his sub attacked a Japanese convoy off Formosa on July 31, 1944. A 1931 graduate of the Naval Academy, Ramage took over his first command--the submarine Trout--in 1942. The Trout engaged in successful patrols near Midway and the Truk Islands and in the South China Sea. Later in 1942, he was promoted to commander and the next year took over command of the Parche. After retiring from the Navy, Ramage was active in consulting and community service work. In Bethesda, Md., on April 16 of cancer.
