U.S. Supreme Court Ruling Puts Limits on Freedom of Religion

Your editorial opposition to Justice Antonin Scalia’s majority opinion “sounds” solid, but it once again suffers from your typical liberal-conservative tendencies to stress form over substance.

Yes, Scalia’s opinion threatens constitutionally guaranteed religious freedom. But in all sincerity, is religion really such a good thing? Religion is both an infectious mental disorder (schizophrenia) and an institutionalized attempt to control that disorder. Religion is compelled upon us from birth. It causes more segregation, persecution, war and death than any other creation of humanity.

Truly religion’s solutions are the essence of its problems. It appears that in asserting the previously recognized danger of peyote to the human soul, the court may have unconsciously recognized the drug-like damage wrought by religion on the human mind. The multi-flawed Constitution is not worthy of blind, legalistic obedience. The court’s far more important recognition marks the beginning of a healthy victory for the human heart.
