Soviets, Czechs Advance in World Hockey

The Soviet Union shut out Sweden, 3-0, and Czechoslovakia edged Canada, 3-2, in opening medal-round games Saturday at the World Hockey Championships in Bern, Switzerland.

Sergei Makarov, who played with the NHL’s Calgary Flames, knocked in a rebound at 5:49 in the second period to open the scoring for the Soviets.

Andrei Khomutov made it 2-0 on a breakaway at 5:36 in the third period. He is second in the scoring race with 14 points, behind Canada’s Steve Yzerman, who has 16.

The Czechs got goals by Jiri Kucera and Zdenko Ciger in a 2:48 span halfway through the opening period and held off Canada.
