NAMES IN THE NEWS : Yeltsin on Feet After Surgery
Maverick Soviet politician Boris Yeltsin got up from his hospital bed and walked today for the first time since undergoing surgery for a slipped disc two days ago, his doctor said. The 59-year-old opposition figure recovered “90 percent of the movement in his right foot and is recovering satisfactorily from the operation,” said Dr. Josep Llovet Tapies of Barcelona Hospital.
Yeltsin arrived Sunday to appear on a Catalonian regional television talk show. On Monday, he canceled his activities after complaining of back pains and was later taken to the hospital for surgery.
