P.M. BRIEFING : Tribune Co. CEO to Step Down

Stanton Cook said today he will step down as chief executive officer of the Tribune Co., which publishes the Chicago Tribune, the New York Daily News and other newspapers.

Cook, who will be 65 in July, told the annual meeting that he will remain as Tribune Co. chairman when the change takes place next Aug. 1.

He will be replaced as chief executive officer by Charles Brumback, currently president of the Tribune Co.

Cook said he will also relinquish his post as publisher of the Chicago Tribune. That position will go to John Madigan, president of the Chicago Tribune Co.

Cook joined the Tribune Co. in 1951. He has been CEO since 1974.
