NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Indians Bury Victim of Gambling War

Singing “Give Peace a Chance,” Mohawks traveling in a cortege of bullet-pocked cars buried an Indian killed in a factional battle over gambling on the St. Regis Indian Reservation. The warring factions laid aside their differences long enough for the church funeral of gambling opponent Matthew Pyke, 22, who was killed in a cross fire on the Canadian side of the reservation. Some 500 mourners walked in rows, holding hands. The cortege was led by 40 Mohawks wearing clan beads, embroidered shirts and other traditional Indian dress. In other developments, New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo proposed creation of a internal police force for the reservation.
