World Pact to End Death Penalty Urged

GENEVA —
The Central Committee of the World Council of Churches has declared its “unconditional opposition to the death penalty” and urged governments to ratify a world agreement to end that penalty.
The council had not previously explicitly rejected capital punishment, but in 1971 it urged churches to promote abolition efforts.
