P. M. BRIEFING : Postal Strike in West Germany
More than 12,000 West German postal workers staged wildcat strikes today to back demands for increased work breaks.
The postal workers’ union said 40 trains packed with about 4 million letters and parcels were left unsorted on the sidings in Cologne, while almost no mail was delivered in and around Duesseldorf and the Ruhr industrial area.
Businesses and residents in Hamburg went without their mail for a second day as warning strikes escalated around the country to put pressure on employers at negotiations which resumed with the union today.
The union wants its members’ hourly break to be extended from 6 to 10 minutes.
