Croatian nationalists headed for a landslide win over the shattered ruling Communist Party in the second round of the Yugoslav republic’s free elections, according to preliminary results Monday.

Election officials said partial results from 52 of the 225 voting districts showed the Croatian Democratic Union, a right-wing and strongly separatist party, leading in at least 36 areas after Sunday’s vote. The Communists led in 11 districts. Final results are expected later this week.
