Mason E. Hale; Botanist
Mason E. Hale, 61, Smithsonian Institution botanist and international expert on lichens. Author of 150 scholarly articles and five books on lichens, he studied lichens as indicators of pollution for the U.S. Forest Service in the mountains of West Virginia, Colorado and Wyoming. In Arlington, Va., on April 30 of cancer.
