Top Black in U.S. Catholic Church Resigns Duties

ATLANTA — Archbishop Eugene Marino, the highest-ranking black in the U.S. Roman Catholic hierarchy, has temporarily relinquished his duties as head of the Atlanta archdiocese after physicians found him suffering from “acute exhaustion and facing imminent danger of cardiac stress,” a spokesman said Tuesday.
