WORLD IN BRIEF : NICARAGUA : 60,000 Strikers Face Loss of Public Jobs

About 60,000 government workers staged sit-in strikes, demanding 200% pay increases and paralyzing the new administration despite its threats to fire those who do not return to work. Shouting “Power to the people!” about 2,000 workers broke through a cordon of 100 police officers and occupied a plaza outside the offices of President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro.
