A tanker spilled nearly 1,000 tons of oil Saturday into the English Channel after a collision with a trawler, the Department of Transport said.

The 274,531-ton Liberian-registered Rosebay was on its way from the Persian Gulf to Rotterdam when one of its tanks was damaged in the collision 14 miles south of Start Point in Devon, southern England. No injuries were reported.
