World IN BRIEF : LEBANON : Pro-Israeli General Offers Hostage Deal

Maj. Gen. Antoine Lahad, commander of the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army, said he is ready to swap a “large number” of the 300 Muslims held in southern Lebanon by his militia for Western hostages--including six Americans--held by pro-Iranian Shiites. Lahad also wants included in the trade three Israeli servicemen and several of his men held by Shiite factions. An Israeli government spokesman, asked about the offer, said, “I don’t think it depends on Lahad or us but on the other side.”
