Kohl May Seek Early Union Vote
Chancellor Helmut Kohl, worried that his plans for speedy unification could get bogged down after two state election losses, hinted today that he may push for elections for a united German government as soon as December.
Asked whether there could be all-German elections this year, Kohl said today he is “standing by” West German federal elections on Dec. 2. But he also said “there are discussions” in East Germany about holding all-German elections this year.
Kohl said he feels it is important to discuss the issue “if that is what’s desired.”
