Angels Are Alive, Well and Living in L.A.

Sophy Burnham, author of “A Book of Angels” (May 1) tells of meeting angels and having her life saved by one. Welcome, Sophy . . . angels are alive and well and living in Los Angeles.

A few years ago, my daughter and I were driving north on the Ventura Freeway. There was a tire on the road, and as I hit it (all four lanes were filled and there was no place to swerve) it caused the front right tire to blow out. The car lost steering capacity, was swaying out of control, the wheel was loose, and we were traveling 55 m.p.h. in heavy traffic, in the middle lane, surrounded on both sides.

I cried out, “Jesus!”

Immediately, power was restored to the wheel, the car stayed within the lane, and we veered safely to the side of the road, parked and walked about half a mile to the emergency phone. As we approached, a CHP officer pulled up on his motorcycle.

All the while maintaining a cheerful attitude, he had the tire changed in a short time while we stood on a freeway shoulder shaken by the furiously whizzing traffic. When he was finished, we thanked him and said that everyone else might think that he was a member of the California Highway Patrol, but we knew better--he was really an angel. He smiled. About a mile away, a car passed us with the bumper sticker: “EXPECT A MIRACLE.”

That I do. That I do . . . and His angels come through.
