WORLD IN BRIEF : PAPUA NEW GUINEA : Bougainville Rebels Lose in ‘War’ of Fax

Rebels on the South Pacific island of Bougainville declared independence, but their action was immediately rejected by the Papua New Guinea government. Leaders of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army declared their independence in a fax sent to the Papua New Guinea government, foreign diplomats and wire services. It provoked an immediate response from acting Premier Ted Diro: “The crisis cannot be resolved by publicity-grabbing declarations of independence that are totally without substance.”
