WORLD IN BRIEF : GUATEMALA : Candidate Asks for Election Observers

Opposition presidential candidate Jorge Carpio appealed to State Department and congressional officials for international observers to monitor his nation’s scheduled elections. Carpio said he was inviting observers from many countries and international organizations, including the U.S. government and an organization set up by former President Jimmy Carter. Elections are due in the next six months.
