Edward S. Steitz, 69, a basketball rules authority who brought the three-point shot to the international and college game, died at his home near Springfield, Mass.
The cause of death was not immediately revealed. Steitz was hospitalized earlier in the year after a severe angina attack.
Steitz was best known in the United States as national editor for the NCAA rules committee, a position he held since 1968.
Steitz was responsible for most of the rules changes in college basketball during the last 25 years, including the time clock, the elimination of jump balls except at the start of the game and the return of the dunk.
