USOC Panel Backs Renovation Plan

Renovation and expansion plans expected to cost $9 million to $18 million for the Olympic Training Center have been approved by the executive committee of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

At its meeting Monday in Colorado Springs, the executive committee approved a proposal calling for construction of a swimming pool, a multipurpose gym, a new residence hall and a dining area.

If approved by the USOC’s board of directors at meetings June 15-17 in San Diego, construction could begin next spring, said Robert Helmick, USOC president.

“We have different plans,” he said.

“The one at $9 million is bare bones. The one at $18 million would give us hotel-like accommodations. I’m confident the board of directors will approve something between those two.”

Construction will not begin until sources of funding have been found, he said.

Funding is expected to come from profits from a new Coin Act, special corporate sponsorships at the training center and other unidentified new sources.
