NEW YORK — New York judge said today that two court-appointed doctors had found Harry Helmsley, the 81-year-old husband of the hotel queen convicted of federal tax evasion, unfit to stand trial on 188 state charges of tax fraud.
“Both doctors have found Mr. Helmsley to be unfit, but they have not completed their report,” Manhattan Supreme Court Justice John A. K. Bradley said at a pretrial hearing. Bradley will decide on June 20 whether to hold a competency hearing.
Leona Helmsley was convicted last August of 33 federal counts of tax evasion, sentenced to four years in prison, fined $7.1 million and ordered to perform 750 hours of community service. She remains free on a $25-million appeal bond, but she and Helmsley are facing state charges of tax evasion.
