Dutch cyclist Erwin Nijboer was in very serious condition in a Spanish intensive care unit after he smashed into a cement wall in a sprint at the end of the third stage of the Tour of Aragon race at Zaragoza.

Doctors said Nijboer, a 26-year-old rider with the West German Stuttgart team, broke his skull, his arm and two ribs in the fall, which came as he rounded a corner.
