BEIJING : A Sad Anniversary in China
Groups supporting the pro-democracy movement in China plan demonstrations in Hong Kong and world capitals this weekend to mark the first anniversary of Beijing’s brutal crackdown on last spring’s student-led protests.
But Beijing authorities have so far kept the lid on any unrest in the Chinese capital.
Pressures for political liberalization and economic reform remain strong in China, but the Communist leadership shows a clear determination to ensure political stability by cracking down on any overt dissent. It has given high priority to the goal of getting through the series of pro-democracy anniversaries leading up to June 4 without trouble, viewing it as something of a milestone.
