From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Troops moved into the streets of Port Gentil in Gabon to quell violence and allow oil shipments to resume, the government said. The worst outbreak of violence since the West African nation won independence from France in 1960 was apparently triggered by the suspicious death of a leading opposition politician, Joseph Rendjambe, who was found dead in a hotel room. Protesters have demonstrated for six days demanding the resignation of President Omar Bongo.
