More Joffrey Controversy: The Joffrey Ballet has apparently cancelled its four scheduled performances at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C., next week. After staying with the Joffrey engagement through the troubled company’s recent crises, Spoleto officials were stunned to hear unofficially that the Joffrey decided in a secret board meeting Tuesday evening to cancel its summer tour. “The Joffrey has done something that I think is unconscionable,” Spoleto general director Nigel Redden said. “I understand that they have financial problems, but what they are doing is dragging others down with a sinking ship.” Joffrey officials declined to confirm or deny the report. Other Joffrey engagements that may be threatened are appearances at the Artpark festival in New York and Wolf Trap Farm Park.
