Report on Expansion of Jail Ruled Adequate
Efforts by the city and two neighborhood groups to block the county’s plan for expansion of the Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles were dealt a possibly fatal blow Wednesday when a judge ruled that an environmental impact report for the project is basically adequate.
Superior Court Judge David P. Yaffe found the report faulty in some respects involving parking and fire protection, but he ruled the report for a 2,408-bed addition approved by the Board of Supervisors last August was drawn up in good faith and complies with the law.
Charging that the expansion would “hurt business and jeopardize the safety of residents,” the City Council directed the city attorney’s office last September to oppose the jail’s expansion. A lawsuit filed subsequently challenged the EIR on the project.
