Roman Catholic Bishop Leo T. Maher was resting comfortably at home Wednesday after being released Tuesday afternoon from Green Hospital at Scripps Clinic.

Maher had been hospitalized nearly three weeks, since a May 9 operation to remove a swollen remnant of a cancerous tumor. Doctors removed part of the tumor April 25, but had to perform a second surgery after the remnant began blocking the flow of spinal fluid out of the brain, worsening motor problems for Maher.

Maher began daily radiation treatments May 21, and they are not producing any debilitating side effects and will continue daily for several weeks, said Dr. Ruth H. Grobstein, head of radiation oncology at Scripps.

The bishop “wants everyone to know how good he’s feeling. He’s doing extremely well,” Grobstein said. “Each day he’s showing substantial improvement.”

During his three weeks in the hospital, Maher’s motor problems continued and he could walk only with the aid of a walker or another person. Now he is managing to walk short distances, said Dan Pitre, spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego.
