NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Navy Helicopters Grounded Again
The Navy grounded its entire fleet of H-46 Sea Knight helicopters--342 aircraft--for the second time in two weeks. Blamed this time were fractures in the “rotor hub connecting links” that hold the rotor blades to the rotor hub, discovered during routine maintenance. The Navy said the current action was not related to the May 13 grounding, ordered after an accident investigation revealed a problem in the helicopters’ aft transmission. That investigation stemmed from a May 4 crash of an H-46 at Twentynine Palms, Calif., in which four Marines were injured.
