Union Pacific Negotiating Move From Las Vegas to Barstow

LAS VEGAS — Union Pacific Railroad executives told the Nevada Public Service Commission that the company is negotiating to move its fuel facilities from Las Vegas’ “Glitter Gulch” to Barstow, Calif., in the Mojave Desert.
The railroad company has been trying to relocate much of its downtown Las Vegas operations for several years, but most proposed sites in southern Nevada have met citizen opposition.
The railroad said Monday that by moving to Barstow, the railroad would remain near the CalNev fuel pipelines as a fueling source for trains traveling between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City via Las Vegas.
If negotiations succeed, about a dozen locomotive mechanics will be transferred from southern Nevada to Barstow.
The railroad yards, located in downtown Las Vegas, were built when Las Vegas was only a railroad stop. As the community grew into the state’s largest city, the railroad yards became surrounded by businesses and casinos.
The Union Pacific yards currently are located behind the Union Plaza Hotel-casino at the foot of Fremont Street.
