What if Mikhail S. Gorbachev had shown up as scheduled? Even with the Soviet president a no-show, the Brand family found its dairy farm near Minneapolis swamped with reporters.

“It’s still been very busy,” Cecilia Brand said in between interviews Monday. “One of the TV channels came out. We’ve had a couple of interviews with farm magazines. I suspect that after tomorrow things will settle down.”

The Brands said another hectic day was likely today, when plans called for a bald eagle to be set free to honor Gorbachev’s visit to Minnesota. The bird was scheduled to be released during Gorbachev’s canceled visit to the farm on Sunday.

Gorbachev and his wife, Raisa, dropped the planned 25-minute visit because they were running behind schedule. But they met the Brands on the airport Tarmac before their departure Sunday night.
