Ex-G.I. Spy Gets Life in W. German Court
A West German court sentenced a retired U.S. Army sergeant from Ohio to life in prison today for selling military secrets to Communist governments, ruling that he had placed West German and U.S. troops at risk.
The judge said Clyde Lee Conrad, 42, was paid more than $1.3 million by the former Communist governments of Hungary and Czechoslovakia between 1975 and 1985. Secret service experts said it was the largest known fee paid to an agent.
Conrad, of Bergholz, Ohio, was a document custodian with U.S. forces in West Germany for five years before he retired in 1985.
