Natalia Makarova will be the American Ballet Theatre’s new artistic director.

In a statement Thursday, Makarova said: “I have considered American Ballet Theatre my home since I left Russia in 1970. . . . I am happy to now be reassociated with ABT and look forward to passing on my knowledge and artistic experience.”

The dancer, who made her ABT debut in 1970 in “Giselle,” spent 15 years as a ballerina in the company. She replaces Mikhail Baryshnikov, who resigned in September, and will consult on repertory and planning and advise on casting, coaching and stagings.

She is married to businessman Edward Karkar. They have a son, Andre Michael, and live in San Francisco.
