WORLD IN BRIEF : INDIA : Sikh Extremists Paralyze Punjab

Sikh extremists brought northern Punjab state to a halt with a general strike and killed six people in attacks on police stations on the anniversary of the Indian army’s assault on Sikhdom’s holiest shrine. Sikh separatists, waging a bloody campaign for a theocratic state in Punjab since 1983, attacked police and paramilitary posts with rockets and submachine guns, but police said there were only six casualties because virtually all the rockets missed their targets.
