Service for Rev. Aherne Set
A memorial service will be held Saturday for the Rev. John Robert Aherne, 77, former principal of St. Augustine High School in San Diego and the author of several books of poetry.
Aherne died June 4 after a long illness.
In addition to his work as an educator and writer, Aherne was an associate editor of the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Religion.
He was born July 18, 1912, in Philadelphia, where he graduated in 1929 from Northeast Catholic High School. He became a priest in the early 1930s.
Father Aherne was assigned to St. Augustine High School in 1942. He became principal in 1953.
He returned to the East Coast in 1962 and was appointed academic vice president of Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass.
He is survived by three sisters, Sister Consuelo Marie Aherne of Chestnut Hill, Pa.; Jeanne Brady of Norristown, Pa.; and Sister Marion Aherne of Glenside, Pa.
Donations may be made to the Father John R. Aherne Endowment Fund at St. Augustine High School.
