Israeli troops pursuing Palestinian stone-throwers fired tear gas into a U.N. clinic in Gaza City, and 66 infants and toddlers were treated after inhaling the fumes, the army said. Witnesses said six or seven soldiers in plainclothes chased stone-throwing Arab youths into the U.N. Relief and Works Agency Swedish Health Center and threw three tear gas grenades into the courtyard of the clinic. Fourteen of the 66 children were in moderate to serious condition and on respirators, hospital officials said. An official military source said the soldiers acted contrary to orders, and the Israeli military commander in Gaza has ordered legal steps against those involved.
